The CBD Bath Craze Has Arrived, But is it All Hype?

The market for CBD-infused products is booming. Depending on where you live, you can now get everything from CBD skincare and beauty products to CBD dog treats.

The latest rage among CBD users are bath bombs containing this cannabis-derived chemical. Those who have tried them claim that taking a CBD bath is a unique experience that can help you get rid of pains and aches, reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety, and make your skin glow.

These claims are not without their scientific merit. CBD, or cannabidiol, has been the subject of extensive clinical research in recent years and the US Food and Drug Administration has even approved it for treatment of two types of epilepsy.

Unlike THC, which is the main psychoactive ingredient in the Cannabis plant, CBD does not produce a high. While the exact mechanisms of action of CBD are unknown, the World Health Organization has published a report stating that “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential and there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

So, let’s take a closer look at how CBD bath bombs work and the reasons why you should give them a try.

1.     Fibromyalgia relief

The most often cited benefit of using CBD bath bombs is their potential to relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by persistent and widespread pain, extreme sensitivity to touch, fatigue, insomnia, and cognitive problems.

CBD bath bombs contain cannabidiol oil which is absorbed through the skin pores. CBD reacts with the natural cannabinoid produced by our bodies, called anandamide. Anandamide affects the way the central nervous system interprets pain caused by fibromyalgia and acts as a natural pain-reliever.

There is some evidence that fibromyalgia and other treatment-resistant conditions may be caused by endocannabinoid deficiency, which means that people suffering from these disorders could benefit greatly from using CBD products.

2.     Fight inflammation

Using a CDB bath bomb can also help reduce inflammation in the body. Research has shown that CBD can help alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other chronic inflammatory diseases.

CBD bath bombs can also reduce the appearance of acne and make your skin glow. Owing to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD products promote the healing process of acne-prone skin. These products are also suitable for sensitive skin and can actually help normalize red, irritated skin.

Even if you’re not suffering from any type of inflammation or chronic pain condition, taking a soak in a CBD bath bomb is a great way to ease your back pain after a long day at work or soothe sore muscles post-workout.

3.     Relieve stress and anxiety

Studies have shown that CBD has a significant potential to treat anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

CBD in bath bombs reacts with our body’s endocannabinoid system – a biological system involved in the regulation of different brain circuits that generate stress and anxiety.

The potency of CBD absorbed through the skin during a bath is not as strong as that of orally-ingested CBD oil. That being said, taking a bath in a CBD bath bomb is still a uniquely relaxing experience which can help you relieve stress and anxiety.

4.     Improve sleep quality

If you struggle to fall asleep even after a long busy day, a warm CBD bath before bedtime may be just what you need. Taking a hot bath about 90 minutes before bed has been shown to lower the body’s core temperature and improve sleep quality.

The calming and sleep-inducing effects of cannabidiol have been known for decades. One case study looked at 103 adult patients who had reported trouble sleeping and found that, within the first month of CBD application, the sleep quality improved for nearly 70% of patients.

If you want to maximize the relaxing effects of your CBD bath bomb, try adding several drops of lavender oil to the bath. Both CBD and lavender are known for their distinct scent which can lower the heart rate and slow down the nervous system for a perfect night’s sleep.

5.     Curb nicotine cravings

Finally, taking a CBD bath bomb could also help you overcome the urge to light a cigarette. Products containing CBD oil have been found to decrease nicotine cravings and help former smokers manage symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Studies on animals have shown that CBD can actually disrupt old memories and behavior patterns associated with nicotine addiction. CBD has also been found to reduce the pleasantness of cigarette images in dependent smokers.

So, next time you decide to run a relaxing bath, toss in a store-bought CBD bath bomb or try making one yourself for the ultimate relaxation experience.
